Some significant events & milestones in New Brunswick sports history:
2006 - Moncton hosts the 2006 Memorial Cup hockey tournament for the championship of major junior hockey in Canada. It is the first time the event is held in New Brunswick.
2006 - Russ Howard becomes the first New Brunswick athlete to win an
Olympic gold medal when Canada defeats Finland in curling at the XX
Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy. Howard played second on the Brad Gushue
rink from Newfoundland and Labrador, the first-ever Canadian men’s team to win
the Olympic curling competition.
2005 - Gilles Barrieau finishes as the top percentage harness racing driver in
Canada with a .463 average and garnered a third consecutive nomination for the
prestigious Joe O’Brien Award for horsemanship.
2005 - Ron Harvey, Jr. becomes the first male golfer from New Brunswick and the Maritimes to play in the PGA Tour’s Qualifying Tournament. Harvey earned his spot in the 108-hole event by virtue of his performance in two preliminary tournaments.
2005 - The Moncton Wildcats of
the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) are
awarded the 2006 Memorial Cup. The tournament
to be held May 19th to 28th will crown the champions
of major junior hockey in Canada. It will be
the first time the event is held in New Brunswick.
2005 - Shawn Sawyer finishes third at the Canadian Figure Skating Championships, the first New Brunswick skater to win a medal in national senior competition.
2003 - Golfer Kim Adams wins the women's Canadian
Professional Golfer's Association championship,
becoming the first female New Brunswick golfer to win a
professional tournament.
2003 - Matt Stairs of the Pittsburgh Pirates, passes "Silver" Bill Phillips as
the New Brunswick player having played the most games in Major League baseball,
1039 and counting.
2003 - Bathurst-Campbellton hosts the Canada Winter Games, the first time the
Winter Games are held in New Brunswick.
2002 - Don Sweeney plays his 1,000th NHL game with the Boston Bruins, becoming the first New Brunswick-born player to reach this milestone.
2002 - The first World Pond Hockey Championship is held on Roulston Lake in
Plaster Rock, NB, attracting 38 teams and over 1,000 spectators.
2000 - Wheelchair basketball player Dave Durepos becomes the first New Brunswick
athlete to win a gold medal at the Paralympic Games.
1999 - Sally Rehorick is named Chef-de-Mission of the Canadian Team to the 2002
Winter Games in Salt Lake City, the first time a New Brunswick official has
headed an Olympic delegation.
1998 - Hugh Yik, who previously won the national novice title, wins the Canadian Junior Figure Skating Championship.
1998 - Pitcher Jason Dickson of the Anahiem Angels is named to the American
League All-Star team, the first New Brunswick baseball player to be so honored.
1998 - the Melissa McClure team wins the World Junior Women's Curling
Championship in Thunder Bay.
1998 - Team captain Stacy Wilson, Thérèse Brisson, Kathy McCormack and Lesley
Reddon win the silver medal in the first-ever women's hockey event at the
Winter Olympics in Nagano.
1996 - Marianne Limpert wins a silver medal in the 200 meter individual medley at
the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, becoming the first New Brunswick athlete to win
a medal at the summer games.
1992 - Darren Ritchie wins the Canadian Amateur Championship at the Riverside
Country Club, the first New Brunswick golfer to do so.
1992 - Mark Lackie becomes the first New Brunswick athlete to win an Olympic
silver medal as a member of the short track speed skating 5,000 meter relay
team in Albertville, France.
