Some significant events & milestones in New Brunswick sports history:

  • 1990 - Jill Blois and her teammates win the World Championship for coxless fours, the first New Brunswick athlete to win a world rowing title since the Paris Crew in 1867.
     
  • 1988 - Bob Kierstead is named coach of the Olympic pistol team, becoming the first New Brunswicker to coach an Olympic team.
     
  •  1988 - Lise Gautreau competes in rhythmic gymnastics at the Summer Games in Seoul, becoming the first New Brunswick Acadian athlete to compete in the Olympics.
     
  • 1988 - The Jim Sullivan team wins the World Junior Curling Championship in Fusen, West Germany, becoming the first New Brunswick team to win a world curling event.

  • 1986 - Everett Sanipass is drafted in the first round by the Chicago Black Hawks and becomes the first New Brunswick Mi'kmaq to play in the National Hockey League.

  • 1986 - The Montreal Alouettes and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League play an exhibition game at the Canada Games Stadium in Saint John, the first time professional football has been played in New Brunswick.
     
  • 1985 - Saint John hosts the Canada Summer Games, the first time the Games are held in New Brunswick.

  • 1984 - Carole Keyes competes in the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo becoming the first New Brunswick athlete to compete in three Olympics.
     
  • 1982 - The New Brunswick Hawks win the Calder Cup as the American Hockey League champions. It is the first professional hockey title for a New Brunswick team.

  • 1981 - Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus capture the CIAU men's hockey championship, marking the first time the title has been won by a team east of Ontario.
     
  • 1980 - Moncton hosts the Air Canada Silver Broom, the first time New Brunswick hosts a world curling championship.

  • 1979 - The first-ever "Jeux l'Acadie" for francophone athletes in New Brunswick is held in Moncton.
     
  • 1978 - The New Brunswick Hawks, the American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Black Hawks located in Moncton, become the province’s first professional hockey franchise.

  • 1976 - A Fredericton all-star team plays the world champion Cuban national team, losing 1-0 in the "greatest baseball game ever played" in New Brunswick.
     
  • 1976 - Joyce Douthwright (Slipp) is named captain of the women's basketball team for the Olympic Games in Montreal, the first time a New Brunswick athlete has captained an Olympic team.
