Our Sporting Heritage:  1900-1850
 
 

Some significant events & milestones in New Brunswick sports history:

  • 1892 - The new game of basketball, invented by James Naismith, is introduced to the YMCA in St. Stephen by Lyman Archibald, a student of Dr. Naismith. It is one of the first places in Canada to try the new game.
     
  • 1881 - Wallace Ross wins the World Championship of rowing at the Grand International Regatta in Toronto.
     
  • 1879 - Bill Phillips becomes the first Canadian to play major league baseball (with Cleveland of the National League).
     
  • 1871 - The "Moosepath" race track opens in Saint John, later to become the Exhibition Park Raceway which is still in operation today.
     
  • 1870 - The first YMCA in Canada opens in Saint John.
     
  • 1867 - Four oarsmen from Saint John win the World Championship in Paris, becoming Canada's first World Champions, and earning the nick-name the "Paris Crew".
     
  • 1854 - A curling club is established in Fredericton, the first such club organized in New Brunswick.
